Transition Your Wardrobe

It’s time to wave goodbye to summer and say hello to fall.  But that doesn’t mean you have to stash away all of your summer clothes just yet.  As we move more and more towards the direction of seasonless clothing there are many ways you can take your favorite summer pieces and revive them in a fresh new way to strut them right into fall.  While it may be time to put certain pieces away till next summer, a lot of the items in your closet can be revived for the new season just by changing how you style them.  It is especially tricky if you live in a warm climate and want to start dressing for fall but you are fighting 85 degree days.  However, there are still ways you can achieve this.  You may not want to throw a knit over your dress or add a long sleeve top to wear as a layering piece under your summer shirt, BUT you can throw on a lighter weight jacket, wear chunkier heels, mules, or booties, and rethink your accessories to still create the transitional look.  Depending on your climate you may have to take some liberties with some of the styling I’ve done for my personal looks.

The key point is to STOP wearing your summer clothes like you would in July and find new ways to wear them for September and on into fall.  And as the temperatures drop you can add tights, wear boots, booties and close-toe shoes as well as heavier jackets and layering pieces.

So here are the pieces and how to transition them:

Summer Shorts – Add a long sleeve top or knit and pair this look with a bootie.

White Jeans – Pair your jeans with a great top and a layering piece like a blazer.  Finish the look with a chunky heel.

White Dress – Cover your summer dress with a chunky knit and a sleek heel.

Floral Summer Dress – Throw a knit over your floral summer dress and pair the look with a kitten heel.

Summer Top – Add a long sleeve layering piece under your summer top and pair these pieces with leather shorts or skirt and a slouchy boot.

Bright Summer Skirt – Add some richness to your skirt by wearing a simple tank and a leather jacket or blazer paired with a chunky heel.

I also want to discuss accessorizing for fall because how you accessorize can either make your outfit exceptional or cause it to fall flat (pun intended).  You see me in sleek heels and open toe shoes and years ago that would have been a big no no.  But today that is totally acceptable…. the key is to just do it right!  So, if you want to wear an open toe heel make sure you are balancing that out with the proper pieces in your outfit.  You don’t always have to wear boots or booties; switch it up and make your look chicer by keeping some of those more summer shoes in your wardrobe for a bit longer.  I do believe there are some shoes like flat strappy sandals and espadrilles that you can put away till next summer.  When thinking about sandals think of chunkier heels or again using the sleek heel but doing it in the right way like jeans, blazer and a strappy heel verses a summer dress worn as you would in summer with a strappy heel…that would be a no no! Also, don’t forget about your purses!  Carrying really summery bags can be retired for now.  And bring out your more fall and winter handbags.  A purse can say a lot about your look so it is important to think through what you are carrying.   And always make sure to add your jewelry and accessories.  If you want to wear white earrings make sure your look isn’t too summery to be able to add those into the mix.  Also, your belts, take your super summery belts and place them in the back of your closet and focus on current season belts.   Transitioning one season’s clothing into the next season can be tricky especially when going from summer to fall, but it can be done and done in a super chic way!  If you follow the steps I laid out and use these as a guideline you will be successful in creating some fabulous looks.  Just look in your own closet and find the similar pieces that you own and put your outfits together.  Just don’t forget to accessorize!

XO!
