Swimwear Trends 2020
Swimwear trends 2020
It is post Memorial Day so for me that means summer has begun! Which also means it is officially swimsuit season. So, let’s talk about trends in swimwear. I am also giving you a shopping list of my favorite brands.
Swimwear is a tough thing to buy for 99.9% of us. Unless you are one of those rare birds who puts on a bathing suit, takes one look in the mirror and thinks yep I look great and heads to the register or out the door then you are in the ‘I hate shopping for bathing suits majority’. And you know that one girl who feels great in a bathing suit can also put one on in the dead of winter and feel confident…gosh I envy her! For the rest of us buying swimwear isn’t always so easy and often a struggle. I hope this guide of top trends and some stylist shopping tips will help make this a little easier for you this summer. Not to mention my very helpful, if I do say so myself, guide for shopping for a great suit. Offering some less well-known brands as well as some of my favorite classics.
First, I want to address two things….one good and one, in my opinion, bad. First up the good news….one pieces are THE THING! Can I get an amen?! One piece’s hides our tummies which most of us want to conceal. In years past one piece was considered more of a “mom” bathing suit, not sexy or fun at all. Well that has completely changed! One piece is now anything but your boring old safe option. There are countless amazing styles and everyone will be able to find a great one piece for the summer.
Now for the bad news….what is with all the butts?! Since when did putting your ass (yes, this word is necessary here) become the thing? I know back in the 90’s we went through the thong phase (cue music on the thong, thong, thong, thong). But we had moved past that hadn’t we?! Now every time I go to the beach, I am staring at everyone’s butts and I HATE it! I hate that girls and women feel that they need to put on these barely there bathing suits. I hate what it says about them. But what I hate even more is these children, yes children, that have their bums hanging out all over the place. I know this is going to sound judgy, and in truth I am judging, but who in the world are these parents that are allowing their middle school and high school daughters to go to the beach or pool with their entire backside out?! There is zero reason for this! Your child will have her entire life to be grown and to make the decision to expose herself if she chooses but while she is still a child it is your right, and in my opinion obligation, to tell her to turn her behind around, pun intended, and march back into the dressing room to find another suit. And if your child is the only one with a fully covered bottom then good for you! Your daughter may not understand and think you are being unfair but you will know you are loving her well and trying to preserve her virtue.
When I go with my fiancée to the beach these days he literally has nowhere to look because the entire beach is filled with women's backsides and I am so over it! And if you are an adult making the choice to expose yourself on the beach, I would ask you to think about the other people who are being affected by your choice. Men who struggle with porn or sexual addiction, children being exposed (especially young boys) to things their eyes should not be seeing yet, and just flat out making people uncomfortable. I promise you that most people do NOT want to see your butts no matter how tone and fit they are. And many of these woman are not even in the proper shape to be wearing these skimpy suits or they are so young that they haven’t been affected yet by gravity or all the lumps and bumps that come with age and the effects of queso.
OK I am officially stepping off my soap box and going to talk about swimsuit fashion. Here are the top trends in swimwear for summer 2020:
Brights –
This kind of goes without saying when talking swimwear but bright and vibrant are very on trend. Did I mention that the 90’s are back; especially where swimwear is involved?!
Sleeves –
I know this may sound crazy, and impractical but it is true. And so many of these suits are adorable they just aren’t great for tan lines. These are great options if you spend more time in the cabana or under the umbrella then in the sun. Short sleeves, off the shoulder, full sleeves….all are options for this trend!
Animal –
I am always of the belief that animal print is always in fashion so if you don’t have some kind of animal print in your closet add it to your list! Or if you have a classic cheetah print maybe go for something a bit different like snake, colorful leopard or a cat print.
Cutouts –
Again a nod to the 90’s on this one. There are great cutouts of all kinds for one pieces or even two pieces. All kinds of unique ways to show a little skin.
Take Me to the Disco –
shiny metallics and fabrics are a great new addition to your bathing suit drawer.
Motor Sport –
Sporty style bathing suits like tankinis, wide zippers, color blocking that give these suits a sporty look and feel.
High contrast –
Black and white in all kinds of mixes and patterns
Vacation Mode –
Tropical prints galore! Another great add for your swimwear this season. Think of prints like palm leaves, fruit, and words.
Tie Dye –
I think this one is self-explanatory yes?!
Barely There –
As discussed above these bathing suits that leave nothing to the imagination are clearly a trend. Not one I am endorsing but one I will mention as it is very popular right now.

Stylist tips for finding a great suit that works for you:
Figure out the area of your body you wish to conceal/minimize and work from that place forward. If you want to minimize your chest don’t get a tiny triangle top that barley covers your nipples. If you want to conceal your bottom don’t go for a large graphic print on the butt or a super skimpy bottom.
Mixing and matching tops and bottoms is key when finding the perfect fit for your body. Buying a set is usually a difficult way to go. And bathing suit brands have done a really nice job over the last few years of creating so many separates and offering multiple styles especially for bottoms, since we are not all the same shape, they finally figured out this was a need!
Sizing up in bathing suits is usually always a good idea. Just because you are a small in clothes doesn’t mean you will be in a bathing suit. I find that they almost always run small. Do NOT be vein when it comes to bathing suit sizes, just buy what fits and feels good. My favorite bathing suit I own is an XL that I bought in Turks and Caicos and I loved it so much so oh well I bought an XL!
Color blocked bathing suits, especially ones that are darker in the section you want to minimize will make you look slimmer. V-necks, diagonal lines, smaller prints, sturdier/more substantial fabrics are all also slenderizing. Just as I mentioned, find the area you want to conceal but also think about what your assets are and focus on showing off those.
If you are shorter, and heels cannot help you here, go for higher cut on the sides as it will help make your legs appear longer. If you have a shorter torso do not wear a higher waist and also a top that comes down lower on your abdomen. You want to allow more space again giving the appearance of a longer torso.
When you find a brand or style that works well for you remember that. It will make it so much easier when you are shopping the next time for a bathing suit. For me I pretty much know what will work and what will not. I know what I want to conceal and where I feel OK in a bathing suit. No matter how much I may love a swimsuit if it isn’t going to flatter me, I won’t even waste my time. There isn’t much worse than wearing a bathing suit that you don’t feel comfortable in!
Everything But Water is a great source for so many brands, and they have countless more online than in stores. I believe if not all, almost all the brands I have on my list can be found at EBW. And they are currently offering 25% off! So, take full advantage! The shopping code is 25NOW that you can use at checkout.
Happy Shopping friends!
