Prints Gone Wild

Prints Gone Wild

It would be much easier to list the prints that are “out of style” then the ones that are super popular right now.  This week I have been discussing my favorite trends in prints but there are many others to mention that I really like but aren’t on my “love” list at the moment.  And if you know me at all, or have been following me for a while, you know that I am forever a fan of pattern mixing but these days pattern mixing has gone off the charts!  The more colorful and bolder the better!

Because it is such a “thing”, I want to give you some helpful tips on pattern mixing:

  • First of all, take a deep breath because there are no rules. Whatever you feel good and confident about you can rock!

  • If you are intimidated by pattern mixing or feel it isn’t quite for you, think about utilizing your accessories to bring in a little extra flare to your look. Shoes, hair accessories, bags and belts are all fabulous ways to add a little pattern mixing to your look in a safe manageable way.

  • Stripes, leopard, and polka-dots, are (usually) the easiest to mix with other prints.

  • This is a personal rule, but I never mix more than three prints in one look.

  • You can pattern mix all with the same pattern. Example could be a standard black and white polka-dot dress, with a pink and white polka dot headband, and a super bold oversized polka-dot bag. Or a skinny vertical stripe skirt with a horizontal wide stripe top.

Stripes: Everything from bold or skinny to vertical or horizontal stripes are a must.  Think of going bold with your stripes and remember they are excellent for pattern mixing.

Rainbow: Because this is a color story more than an actual print it works for any of the prints.  Meaning you can do stripes, gingham or whatever you want in rainbow colors and hit two trends with one piece.

RECENT BLOGS:

Check/gingham: Just like stripes this is a classic that never really goes in or out of style but we are definitely seeing it in a variety of ways this season and not just keeping it to more business attire or more basic pieces.  This season gingham is bold, colorful and making a statement of its own.

Paradise:  Think South Beach, Lilly Pulitzer, Farm Rio, Jimmy Buffet, palm leaves, coconuts, pineapple, parrots, toucans…in essence these make up the paradise trend.  Just embrace it and have fun!

Florals: Yes, we can all agree that floral prints in spring/summer is always a thing.  But this season florals have elevated to a whole new level.  From big and bold to hundreds of tiny little flowers, watercolor/ blur prints, colorful, pastel.  I really think you can take any style, size, shape, color of flower in any way you want and you cannot go wrong!

Polka-dots: Another classic is a polka-dot.  Some seasons it is very popular and others you can’t find it anywhere.  Just like with some of the other classics I have mentioned, go beyond just the basic polka-dot and find other ways to bring this trend into the mix.  Bold dots, colorful, micro mini, accessories…. there are many ways to update this look.  And if you stick to the classic black and white try doing it in an updated silhouette.

So, no matter what prints you adore, take your pick because you can pretty much find them all!  And I must conclude with the statement that even though I didn’t mention leopard it is my favorite.  But to me leopard is almost more of a neutral then a print and I think it is always on trend.  So, this season look for other ways to bring animal prints into your wardrobe like through color, snake, giraffe, crocodile or whatever excites you.

Happy Shopping Ladies!
