The Sweat Life

Even before COVID became a reality in our lives sweats and athleisure wear was a very popular way to dress.  I think in very large part we can “thank” Kim Kardashian and Kanye West for making this trend go off the charts.  From moms who work in the home to boss ladies bringing these comfier casual pieces into our wardrobes is a reality.  But now that COVID has come and wreaked havoc on our lives, causing us to be home much more, these cozy pieces have become staples in our wardrobes.

A full athleisure look is easy enough to pull off. It is when we try and shake things up by mixing our pieces and trying to make these looks chicer that we get stuck. I did a whole week dedicated to dressing up your athleisure and ways to style those items. I also added a blog for that week as well so if you didn’t get a chance check out that week it has some great looks and tips for dressing up your spandex CLICK HERE!

Sweat pants of all varieties are one of the key pant elements in our wardrobes these days but again dressing them up and making them trendier can be a little tricky.  So, this week I am styling my sweatpants in fashionable ways and have also included a personal styling video on how to achieve these looks.

My five top sweatpants trends are as follows:

Warm-Up –

Think Adidas Run DMC look.  If you are too young to get this reference just google it  This pant has been in style for a few years but we are really seeing them everywhere right now.  I love to wear this as a full set but mixing it up is also great.

Skinny –

This pair is just like a typical jogger style but a thinner fabric and more fitted in the legs.  These are fantastic for warmer climates when you don’t want to wear anything too heavy.  These are also really great for booties or taller boots if you want to tuck the pant leg into the boot.  These are perfect for pulling off that trendy look.

Colorful/Pattern –

Neutrals are an easy go-to for these sweats but adding colors and prints are a fun way to step it up.

Flowy Wide Leg – A wider flowy style of knit pant is extra comfy and so fun to wear.  Instead of the joggers these give you lots of room and are the easiest to style as you can wear them just like regular pants.

Boyfriend –

These are baggier and more relaxed.  They have a cinched and higher waste and elastic around the ankle.  You want to do a more fitted top with this style or at least something you can tuck in.  If you want to wear a jacket or looser layer that works too but make sure the shirt you wear can be tucked in so you look more flattered and not so messy and oversized everywhere (unless of course you want that look)

Unless you are doing a truly skinny leg sweat you want to make sure and bring your outfit in at the waist.  So, wear either a fitted top or one you can tuck or do a front tuck with.  Unless you want to have a very baggy, oversized look you need to bring it in at your waist and give it a bit of a tailored look.  Which inevitably will make it look more flattering and polished and less sloppy.  A chunky knit with a front tuck works very nicely with all of these sweats.  Slim knits that can be tucked in, cropped tops (not meaning you have to bear your midriff but something that hits at your waist and doesn’t have to be tucked in), or other fitted tops as simple as a tank top or turtleneck.  One of these tops mixed with one of these styles of pants can stand alone as a look but adding a top layer is also really great.  Blazers, denim jackets, army jackets, leather jackets and so on.  You really can’t go wrong with adding a jacket to these outfits.

How you accessorize always makes a difference.  For jewelry, it all depends on how you want to up your game.  Doing simple layering pieces is perfect and keeps the outfit less dressy but if you want to take it to another level add more chunky and bold pieces.

As for footwear, you can always go with a fashion sneaker (don’t wear the shoes you work out in unless you are trying to keep it very basic and casual).  If you want to step it up go with a sleek heel or booite.  You can also do a taller boot and tuck in the pant but make sure you have the right pant to create the tucked pant look.  I personally think a pointier, sleeker heel is the way to go with sweatpants.  Super chunky shoes can often throw off the chicness of this look.  A sleeker heel will be more flattering all around.

I don’t know about you guys but I am a visual person.  I wrote all this out in case you prefer to read about the different looks.  But for me the photos and video are always most helpful!  I hope you are feeling a bit braver and adventurous in how to style your sweatpants.  And don’t forget to go back and check out how I styled my athleisure.  Wherever I have on biker shorts, if you want something warmer, just swap them out for leggings or workout pants

Happy Shopping!
