Say “YES” to the dress!

Say “YES” to the dress!

Say “YES” to the dress!

Spring means wedding season has arrived!  Every year when spring and summer comes, we inevitably have a wedding to attend and go through the back and forth about what to wear.  This year instead of stressing about your look I can help give you some great ideas for wedding season or any dressy event you have, in the near future.  You can also shop my looks as I have picked out some of my favorites!

BEACH

Think of soft, flowy, and flirty!  And for a beach wedding I would stay away from styles that are structured, dark in color, heavily sequined (however the right sequin can work) or a heavy fabric.  Accessories should follow suit…. nothing too heavy or too layered and chunky.  Shoes should be simple, strappy, delicate (could even get away with a flat).  For layering a simple wrap or appropriate light jacket is perfect but it must be the right jacket…you can’t just grab anything!  Bags should again be light, small, elegant and compliment your dress, no black clutches and definitely not your day bag ladies I don’t care who the designer is!

GARDEN PARTY

Whether having a wedding in the mountains, a garden, or on a farm, there are so many venues that work for this style of dress.  I always have loved the idea of the bride mixing it up a bit and not always having to be completely in white for all the wedding events.  This dress from Anthropologie is perfect because it is still white but at the same time adds a beautiful floral print.  And it is perfect for a more laid-back wedding vibe.  I especially love this for a rehearsal dinner look but it also works for a bridal luncheon or bridal shower.  So much of a look has a lot to do with how you accessorize it.  The accessories really do make such a difference.

Just as I mentioned for the beach wedding, there are options that would not be good for an outdoor wedding in the summer months.  Dark colors, really structured pieces, sequins (unless strategically done or if this happens to be more of a mountains with sequins kind of event) I would stay clear.  Be smart when choosing prints as not all prints work well for these kinds of weddings.

COCKTAIL

For cocktail many people get stuck sometimes on what this means.  So the short answer is that many things go here.  A sexy pant suit, chic jumpsuit, or a true cocktail dress.  For a dress you are not looking for long so something midi length or shorter (but keep it appropriate).  But this does NOT mean a dress you would wear to church or to a nice dinner….you need to go a couple steps above that.  Because of the season you want to stay clear of heavy fabrics and dark colors.  And when I say dark colors I’m not saying you can’t wear navy or black but don’t wear jewel tones or chocolate brown or shades of the variety.

BLACK TIE

Some of the same rules apply here as with the other wedding looks mentioned above so note the fabric and color here as well.  For a black tie wedding it is possible to wear a pant or jumpsuit but be aware that it HAS to be done correctly.  For a dress you need to go long.  The length of the dress has a lot to do with what differentiates between cocktail and black tie.

For all the various wedding or events you may attend in the coming months use the looks I have put together for each category as a guide.  And give yourself freedom to try something different like a pant or a printed dress.  Just make sure your look fits with the style of wedding, venue and time of day.  All of these matter when picking your look.  And if the invitation doesn’t offer guidance for what to wear then looking at venue and time of day is huge.  It is always better to be over dressed then under dressed my friends!  And please don’t forget to accessories properly!  The wrong shoes or accessories (i.e. you carrying a leather bag to the wedding) will be the ruin of your look!

Happy Shopping!
