Fashion Thru COVID NYFW 2021

Fashion Thru COVID NYFW 2021

Fashion month has begun and as always it was kicked off in the Big Apple.  After two seasons of virtual fashion shows we are finally back IRL.  While this FW definitely looked differently than years past it was live!

So here are the biggest differences to note….

The venues that hold many of the seasons fashion shows were not having them this year.  From my understanding, they didn’t want to deal with all the headaches and hassles.  So, other venues were used to create the shows.  The show I was working on was shown in an old Top Shop location on 5th Ave.  It has been vacant for a few years, since Top Shop went out of business.  It was a very large space with several floors and it was a completely blank space so it made for a great option.  I know they held several shows throughout the week.

Vaccination cards were this season’s hottest accessory.  And while that wasn’t required for those in attendance it was required for all of us working folk.  If you didn’t have one of these little precious cards a negative test was accepted.  Masks were optional but let’s be serious who is going around a crowded backstage with tons of people and no mask?!  NO sane person that’s for sure!  So, everyone was wearing masks backstage but out front I saw very few.

The amount of people allowed backstage and in hair and make-up was less than normal.  They limited all the people working and photographers.  And because our show had such a large space the H&MU team and all the backstage dressing was able to be very spaced out.

Because it was warm many designers opted for their shows to be outside.  And fortunately, we only had rain one day all week.  The show I was able to attend did their show in Battery Park and it was amazing.  You don’t have to do much at all when you have a beautiful natural background.

The other very notable difference was that they shortened the show week.  Normally it goes from Thursday to Thursday but FW ended on Sunday this year.  And in past years most designers opt to have their shows later in the week but many of them this season had them at the very beginning.

Now onto what everyone really wants to know about…the FASHION itself!  While this past FW was showcasing trends for Spring 2022 you will be seeing many of these styles and colors in stores and on the streets now!

PRINTS:

Large checkered prints were a standout pattern as well as funkier psychedelic patterns and geometrical shapes

THE LOOK

Underwear as outerwear continues to be popular.  Taking things like bralettes and lace body suits and wearing them as part of your outfit and not just leaving them for the bedroom.

Sheer fabrics will continue to be present and accounted for.  And on a personal note ladies…please look into the proper undergarments when wearing these items☺

Knits continue to be a very strong present in all varieties

The trench silhouettes from jackets to dresses continues to be very strong

Dressing in sets will once again be a strong look

And to much of my personal dismay, low-rise pants and also scarf tops, less to my dismay.  Think Christina Aguilera circa 2002

IT’S IN THE DETAILS

Bubble hems for dresses and skirts.  This hem length does make its way and in and out and it isn’t something we have seen much of for quite some time but you will be seeing it in stores soon!

Fringe is an added detail on everything from coats to bags as well as feathers

COLORS

Marigold as well as butter yellow

Red (bright and vibrant)

Silver and soft grey

Cobalt blue as well as ice blue

Mint and Kelly green

Lavender and Lakers purple

Camel

Petal Pink as well as electrifying pink
