THE LONG & SHORT(S) OF IT

Let me begin by saying as in the case of dresses, blazers and leopard print (to name a few) shorts are never “in” or “out” of fashion.  They are always in!  But as with everything there are seasons where certain pieces explode and become on the must-haves list.  You see them everywhere, in every season and styled in countless ways and that is what we are currently seeing with shorts.  From Bermuda to booty shorts and culottes to biker shorts they are truly everywhere and a must for your wardrobe.  And as I have said many times in the past all trends and colors can be worn by everyone the key is just finding the right version of the trend or color for you☺  For this blog I am focusing on 6 key looks for shorts and giving some great links for these styles.  For each of these trends there are always a variety of lengths from super short to the knee or even past the knee.  So just find what length you are most comfortable with and rock the trend in that length.

A couple stylist tips to share would be that shorts ALWAYS look better with heels as they elongate your legs and help show off the tone in your legs.  While I get that sneakers and flats are also great with shorts if you are looking to elongate, slim, or flatter your look your best bet is to add height.  If you are vertically challenged, like myself, especially if you wear longer shorts (to your knee or even past) wearing a heel is essentially a MUST.  Having shorter legs and wearing something that cuts you off around the knee is going to make you look even shorter so this is where adding height comes in very handy.  Trust me when I say if you want to flatter yourself when you hit the knee (and this goes for dresses and skirts also) adding a few inches is always going to make your look more attractive.

RECENT BLOGS:

Knit is definitely a newer twist on shorts and a great update.  In this category I am talking about everything from biker shorts, to sweats, to sweater fabric shorts.  These tend to lean a bit more on the casual side but as I have said time and time again how you style and accessorize a piece will completely transform it.  And the majority of clothes can be worn a variety of ways and can lean from dressy to casual.

HIGH WAISTED

Higher waisted bottoms can often times be very slimming because they suck in our tummies.  And the high waist short works for every one of these other mentioned styles as you can do any of them in a high waist.  The key here is what you pair with it.  Depending on your torso (long or short) and your comfort level you can do everything from wearing a crop top to an oversized top.  If you wear a crop top then you obviously don’t have to worry about tucking anything in but for any other top, when wearing a high waist, you need to do a full tuck or at least a front tuck.  Adding a belt will also make this look even more polished.

FLOWY

This style can actually look like a skirt and offers a lot of movement and volume.  These shorts are super fun and also a newer look in shorts.  These will be more flattering with a crop top (again depending on your comfort level) or a fitted top and should be tucked in whenever applicable.  Doing a blousier top can work but it must be tucked or with a front tuck and a belt will help here as well.  Just make sure this is executed well or it will look sloppy.  Again, if doing oversized with flowy a heel will help as will making sure the look is tailored at the waist (tucking and a belt if needed).

denim

Of course denim shorts are always in style but they are on another level at the moment.  No matter the season there are countless ways to wear this classic.  From cutoffs to Bermuda to pleated to color there are so many options for denim shorts.  This is one trend where you could have a variety in your wardrobe as one may just not be enough!

LONG(ER)

There wasn’t a great label for this style so I just went with a basic one.  There are so many short short styles so the “longer” version would be styles that range from mid-thigh to Bermuda (just above the knee or to the knee) or culottes (going past the knee).

skort

Welcome back this 90’s look.  This look is business in the front (skirt) and a party in the back (shorts).  Although I will say this style tends to be on the shorter side (although not always) so it may just be a party in the front and a bigger party in the back.  This look also is complimented best when tucking in the top or wearing a crop top.  If you want to pair it with a blousier top follow the guidelines for the “flowy” shorts.

I just want to offer a quick side note, when I say crop top this doesn’t have to mean a top that shows off your stomach (although it can).  It may just be a top that meets right at your waist where the top of the shorts hit.  Again, if you are on the shorter side this top works well in your favor because it doesn’t show off your tummy but hits perfectly with your waistband (as long as they aren’t too low waisted).  I have so many tops in my closet that, on a tall girl or a long torso person, would show off their middle but on me they hit just right.  One of the few privileges of being vertically challenged☺

Happy Shopping!
