Living in a Virtual World

Until a month ago I thought “zoom” was something fancy cars did.  Now Zoom is something we are talking about/using every day. And not just Zoom, but Google Hangouts, Google Meets, Go To Meeting, Join.Me and so on.  And I believe, although I have no solid information to support this but just a best guess, that even as we begin to bring the country back together and back to work, we will still be traveling a lot less (at least for a while).  And many companies may hold back on travel in an effort to save money. SO, ALL that to say I think we will be doing many things virtually for some time to come. That brings me to the reason for this blog which is to help you figure out what to wear when meeting with people online whether for business or for fun.

Now that we have all been in this for a while now hopefully everyone is starting to get tired of the pajamas and workout clothes and are thinking they would like to spruce themselves up a bit for their calls.  And don’t worry I’m not suggesting you put on sequins for these calls but it is a nice idea to make an effort when speaking with others. So, here are my “tips and tricks” for all your virtual calls…

COLOR – Take a BIG step back from all the neutrals and bring some fun hues to your calls.  Just adding color will brighten you up and will instantly make you standout in a positive way during your calls.

COLLARS – Collared shirts are often seen as more having a little more of a professional vibe to them whether they are button down or not.  But these days we are wearing all kinds of button downs as casual with things like shorts and jeans. And they also layer very well. So, while you don’t need a stiff white button front collared shirt you can use any kind of shirt with a collar that you like (and already have in your closet) and throw it on for your calls.  You will automatically feel comfy and polished!

DETAILS – Having little added flourishes on your shirt will make it more interesting.  Prints, bows, cutouts, rhinestones, grommets etc. Any little added details will really make a great look.  You just obviously need to make sure you have them up around your décolletage, shoulders, or neck so that the people you are speaking with can see them☺

ACCESSORIES – If you want to keep things really simple you can wear just a simple t-shirt (V-necks will be most flattering) and add to it.  Add a simple scarf, a great necklace, or even throw a blazer or jacket over the t-shirt. Just adding one element can make your t-shirt more fun/professional.

PAJAMAS AS CLOTHES – So I know I said up at the top that hopefully everyone is over wearing their PJ’s BUT I am talking about ones that can also double as an outfit.  Last week I posted a photo of me at Whole Foods wearing an outfit that was actually pajamas I bought at Target. There are so many adorable sets right now that are sleepwear but can also be worn as an outfit.  So, if you really want to be extra cozy and wear your pajamas on a call wear a fabulous pair that you can really get so much out of. The key here will be prints and color. If they are just grey or something simple you will not have achieved the right look.

The last thing I want to note is your hair and make-up which I also know can be a challenge on these calls.  So, to be helpful I want to give you a few tips to help you appear pulled together and it will only take you 5 minutes.

After you wash and moisturize your face (yes you must still do this daily) apply tinted moisturizer, under eye concealer which you can also apply to your eyelids, fill in your eyebrows (this make the BIGGEST difference), put on your mascara and add lipstick.  Adding a brighter shade is also an instant way to make your whole face glow. And if you want one small added little tip, use some highlighter around your cheekbones. These few steps will get your face fresh and radiant for any call.

For your hair your best friends are your dry shampoo, your hair dryer and a round brush.  Spray all the areas of your scalp that need it, take your fingertips and rub it into your head well.  Then take your hairdryer and round brush and dry and brush through your hair focusing on your scalp. If you don’t want to take those steps, throw on a great headband or fun barrettes which will instantly make your hair seem more pulled together.  And you can also take those hair accessories and then pull your hair back in a ponytail or bun if it feels extra dirty or scraggly that day.

There are all my helpful tips and tricks for conquering the virtual calls with confidence even if you are wearing your pajamas and a headband while homeschooling your kids….it’s really all about how you pull it together!  You CAN do it guys….you’ve got this!

XO!
